It's important to be clear that drug addiction and alcoholism are not considered disabilities by the Social Security Administration. If either (or both) are happening, there must also be a medically determinable impairment (MDI) - which simply means that you must have some other health problem which makes it difficult for you to work. Alcoholism and drug addiction should not be a contributing factor to a person being disabled. In order to present the best case to the SSA, however, and get a positive result to your claim, it's important to be able to show that you have a disability when you are clean from drugs and alcohol, so your attorney will give you information for treatment programs to help you while your case is going through the Social Security system.

If a person has a drug addiction or a problem with alcohol, can he or she still get SSD benefits?
