It's important to be clear that drug addiction and alcoholism are not considered disabilities by the Social Security Administration. If either (or both) are happening, there must also be a medically determinable impairment (MDI) - which simply means that you must have some other health problem which makes it difficult for you to work. Alcoholism and drug addiction should not be a contributing factor to a person being disabled. If a person has a drug addiction or a problem with alcohol, can he or she still get SSD benefits?
