Can I continue to receive benefits if I go back to work?

A: The Social Security Administration encourages disability recipients who can to try to return to a work environment.  These incentives include:

• Trial Work Period (TWP) -- Individuals on disability who can perform some activity are allowed to work, make money and continue to receive disability benefits for nine months (not necessarily consecutive).  There are specific limits on the amount you can earn each month, so be sure you understand the guidelines.
  

• Extended Period of Eligibility (EPE) -- Monthly benefits can still be possible for any month that your income drops below a specified amount, for up to three years after your successful Trial Work Period ends.  This is called the re-entitlement period and is active as long as you still have your disability during this time.

• Impairment-Related Work Expenses (IRWE) -- Costs that are related to your disability are not considered part of the earnings.

• Continuing Medicare -- After the Trial Work Period ends, your Medicare coverage can continue for 39 months as long as you still have your medical disability.  Depending on any income, you may be required to pay for Medicare.
